Borough Seeking HARB Consultant

The Borough of Bellefonte is seeking a consultant who would: 1) provide technical and administrative assistance to property and business owners in the Bellefonte historic district; 2) periodically update the architecture and history section of the Borough’s webpage; 3) develop an electronic database of historic buildings located in the Borough; and 4) fulfill the requirements stipulated in the historic district ordinance. The position is made possible through a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Consultants must meet 36 CFR61 regulations or the equivalent. Qualification of the successful candidate will include a background in architecture, history, or historic preservation with demonstrated experience in the rehabilitation of historic architecture. This position is currently funded for one-year with an excellent chance for renewal.

Seeking Volunteers for Fire Service Task Force

Bellefonte Borough is seeking two volunteers from the community to serve on a regional fire service task force. The anticipated time commitment is two years. The community representatives DO NOT require ANY experience in fire fighting. We are looking individuals with diverse backgrounds to sit on this task force along with representatives from the surrounding fire departments and elected officials. The community members will comprise the majority on the task force. If you are interested in serving, please submit your name to Don Holderman at the Bellefonte Municipal Building located at 236 W. Lamb Street or email your name and contact information to: dholderman@bellefonte.net by no later than July 19, 2010.

Farmers Market News

At their regular meeting on June 21st Council approved a motion that transfers the operation of the farmers market from the Bellefonte Farmers Market Association to the Borough. Citing a number of legal issues associated with having the Association in charge of the market, Council felt this action was the best course of action at this time.

The market will still take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays in front of the Courthouse and will be open to both producers and non-producers.

*Individuals be trained in lead-safe work practices

*Training providers be accredited by EPA.

Bellefonte Borough Working on Commercial Inspection Program

Bellefonte Borough is undertaking a process to develop a Commercial Inspection Ordinance. In discussions with state-wide professionals and fire inspectors, the Borough has developed a time line which includes public participation as an important aspect in the process. Welcome to Bellefonte

Bellefonte is a borough of approximately 6400 people, located in the center of Pennsylvania. It has been home to seven United States Governors, contains exquisite Victorian architecture, is rich in history related to the iron and lumber industry, contains natural resources ideal for outdoor water recreation, and has taken a preeminent role in education. Bellefonte was named for its enormous spring by the French statesman, Talleyrand. The rampant demolition of historic buildings so prevalent elsewhere in the United States from the 1950s – 1970s largely bypassed Bellefonte leaving untouched many large, historically and architecturally significant commercial and residential buildings.
