Latest News from the Borough
This is an email that was sent to the Borough from Big Spring Spirits regarding hand sanitizer….
Hello Bellefonte leaders —
Just wanted to touch base with y’all to let you know what’s going on down here. In terms of alcohol, we continue to provide curbside pick up, local delivery, and free shipping in PA every day, 9 am -10pm.
For food, we are trying to get the local food trucks down here and we are very serious about creating social distancing procedures to keep people from bunching up. Bonnie Blue’s will be here tonight for dinner, and tomorrow for lunch and dinner. Next Wednesday and Thursday we’re hoping to have Thomas Novasel of Happy Valley Chef making pizza in his pizza trailer…will keep you posted.
This is what we are sending folks who inquire about hand sanitizer (believe me, it is never-ending!)–but we simply don’t have any right now beyond the small 50ml tubes we are giving out to customers who make a purchase. We donated our first run–1,000 liters– now are waiting on the raw materials required to make the WHO/FDA approved recipe, some of which have become hard to come by. So it could be a little while before we have any, and it’s really hard to get people to understand that…! Here’s what we’re telling folks, please feel free to share this information:
“Thank you for reaching out to Big Spring Spirits. In our effort to help mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we are doing our best to produce hand sanitizer as quickly as possible. Demand is so high, that initially, we will not be able to keep up with demand. As a result, we have donated 100% of our current inventory to the Centre County Office of Emergency Services for their Director, Jeffrey A. Wharran, to distribute to the county’s emergency agencies.
If you are a first responder in Centre County, please contact Director Wharran at 814-355-6745/ [email protected].
If you are a first responder outside of Centre County, or an organization that is in need of hand sanitizer, or just a member of the public, please keep an eye on our Facebook page. In the coming weeks, we will be shifting 100% of our production capacity to making hand sanitizer, so we are hoping to be able to provide sanitizer to all that are in need. If you would like to be notified when the hand sanitizer will be available for purchase, please email [email protected] to be added to the contact list.
We appreciate your patience while we adapt to ever-changing circumstances.”
Hope you are all safe and that we’ll get to see you soon.

Bellefonte Borough has decided to suspend the start of the brush and grass pickup season. Since it falls under the category of “not a life-sustaining service,” it will be suspended until further notice.
The compost facility on Musser Lane is currently open during the week from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Thursday and open on Friday from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Ordinarily, you need a key during the week; however, due to COVID-19 and the door to the Borough offices being locked, we have left the gate open at those times Monday through Friday. Saturday, April 4, will be the first Saturday that the compost facility will be open this season. It will be self-service; there will be no attendant there for assistance.
The Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority (CCRRA) has announced that the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event scheduled for April 24th and 25th has been POSTPONED until further notice.
Please check the Authority’s website (https://www.centrecountyrecycles.org/)and Facebook page later this summer for updates and a new event date. Until then, stay safe and healthy.
For questions or additional information, please contact Amy Schirf at 814-238-7005, or by e-mail at [email protected].
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the Bellefonte Borough is doing all it can to protect workers providing essential services. One of those services is refuse collection. To better serve you and protect our staff, we are reminding residents and businesses that are open that all trash materials are to be bagged prior to being placed inside the dumpster or can. The only exception is bulk refuse with prior arrangements for scheduled collection.
Thank you for your help.

While social distancing is the right thing to do now, there is real concern that if everyone stays home to shut down Covid-19, small businesses will be shut down as well. With residents self-quarantining themselves and the Pennsylvania government mandating that bars and restaurants be closed, local businesses are already losing income. The local businesses that are an integral part of our community may not survive this.
What can we do during this time to support our local small businesses? There are many businesses in the Borough that are open and providing curbside pickup, takeout or delivery. Place your order and go pick it up or have it delivered to your doorstep.
Downtown Bellefonte Inc (DBI) has a list on its website. DBI has linked to the local businesses’ social media accounts because situations are changing daily. Its page also includes local resources from other organizations and info for small businesses. DBI is keeping it up to date as much as possible. Here is a link to DBI’s website: https://downtownbellefonteinc.com/2020/03/17/covid-19-related-business-announcements-and-resources/.
That being said, here is a list of restaurants in Bellefonte that are doing curbside pickup or delivery…at least the ones DBI is aware of.
Bonfatto’s Italian Market
The Blonde Bistro
Four Ways Pub & Eatery
Good Intent Cider
The Governor’s Pub
Jim’s Italian Cuisine
Old Farmhouse Eatery
